Shorter, longer
1 week
Muscat, Nizwa, the desert and the wadis. The essential loop.

The grand northern tour, from Jebel Akhdar to Jebel Shams.
1 month
The whole Sultanate, from Musandam to Salalah's Dhofar.
How to get around
A week runs as a self-drive loop from Muscat. A car is essential: public transport is scarce outside the capital. A 4×4 is recommended to enter the Wahiba Sands.
Rental car
€35-50/day · French licence accepted · excellent paved roads
4×4 for the desert
double the 2WD rate · essential for the Wahiba Sands
Fuel
~€0.65/litre · stations on every route · very cheap petrol
Wadi approach walks
45 min to 1 h · closed shoes and water · pools at the end
Adapt by season
This northern loop (Muscat, Nizwa, Wahiba) is ideal from October to April: 25 to 30°C, cool wadis and a bearable desert. From May to September the North tops 40°C and the desert is best avoided. The South, Dhofar around Salalah, then takes over: its khareef (monsoon) makes it green and cool at 25°C from June to September, but that is a whole other trip, 1,000 km away.
