When to go to Oman?

The best time to visit Oman is October to March: 20-30°C, dry skies, calm sea and cool desert nights. Summer (May to September) is scorching in the north, above 40°C. But Salalah, in the south, flips the logic: it turns green during the khareef (mid-June to mid-September), the peninsula's only monsoon. Here is the breakdown, month by month and region by region.

The essentials

When to go to Oman, in brief

🟢

October to March: the sweet spot

Dry, mild climate: 20-30°C by day, cool desert nights. The prime window for Muscat, the wadis and the Wahiba desert.

🌿

Salalah's khareef, Jun-Sept

In the south, Dhofar gets a unique monsoon: drizzle, waterfalls and green hills, 20-28°C, while the rest of the country bakes.

🔥

Scorching summer in the north

June and July top 40°C in Muscat, with heavy coastal humidity. The time to avoid for the north and the interior.

🏔️

Mountains and altitude

Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams are cooler. Jebel Akhdar roses bloom in April, and winter nights up there are cold.

🏖️

Sea and diving

Pleasant water October to April on the north coast. Musandam and its fjords are best in the dry, outside humid summer.

Highlights to plan around

The Muscat Festival (January-February) and the Salalah Khareef Festival (mid-July to late August). Two opposite moods.

Our analysis

Oman reads as two climates. In the north and the interior, the rule is clear: aim for the cool season, October to March. In the south, Salalah plays its own tune with the khareef, the only monsoon on the Arabian Peninsula.

The mild season, October to March

This is the prime window for most of the country. Count on 20 to 30°C by day, cool desert nights and dry skies. It is the time for Muscat, the turquoise wadis, the inland forts and a tented night in the Wahiba dunes. December to February form the core of high season: book two to three months ahead.

Summer flips everything in the north: June and July top 40°C in Muscat, with heavy coastal humidity. This is the time to avoid for the interior and the northern coast.

The Salalah case and the khareef

In the south, Dhofar receives a monsoon from the Indian Ocean from mid-June to mid-September. While the north bakes, Salalah turns green: drizzle, waterfalls, grass-covered hills and temperatures of 20 to 28°C. It is a different trip, popular with Gulf visitors escaping the heat.

My firm advice: for a grand northern tour (Muscat, mountains, desert), stick to October-March. Only switch to summer if Salalah and its khareef are your real target. April is also worth it for the Jebel Akhdar roses, before the heavy heat.
