Our analysis

Portugal rewards travelers who aim for the shoulder seasons. From late April to June and September to October, the country offers dry skies, quiet beaches and cities that are still livable. Summer is doable, but the Algarve becomes another world entirely.

The two prime windows, with June on top

From late April to June, the country settles into mild weather: 20 to 28°C, dry skies, calm cities. June stands out, pairing the best weather with the big Popular Saints festivals, in Lisbon as in Porto.

From September to October, the heat eases off (18 to 26°C), the sea stays warm on the Algarve and the summer crowds clear out. It is also harvest season in the Douro Valley. To combine beaches, cities and vineyards, autumn is an excellent compromise.

The crowded summer and the two-speed winter

July and August push the Algarve to saturation: packed beaches, ceiling-high prices, a scorching Alentejo interior at 35°C. If you have no choice, book very early and favor mornings on the beach.

Winter splits the country in two. The Algarve and Lisbon stay mild (8 to 16°C), perfect for an off-season escape. Porto and the North, by contrast, take the rain from December to February. One nuance few anticipate: this is also when Nazaré unleashes its record waves, a sight worth catching from the lighthouse.
