Adapt by season

Cape Town shines in the southern summer

This loop stays on the Cape and Garden Route side, at its best in the southern summer (November to March): sun, beaches, wineries. The southern spring (September-October) adds flowers and stays quieter. Hermanus offers whales from June to November. Avoid mid-December to mid-January, local holidays and peak prices.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2024, going up Table Mountain at 8am sharp: clear sky, no wind. By 11am the cloud layer had closed the summit for the day. Always aim for the first cableway.
  • Keep Cape Town at the start, not the end: the return fatigue is easier to handle on the Garden Route.
  • Boulders Beach early in the morning, before the coaches.

⚠️ Would change

  • Add a night at Plettenberg Bay if you love beaches, by cutting Mossel Bay.
  • On 7 days, don't attempt Kruger: the transfers would eat the trip.
  • Prefer September-October to summer to avoid crowds and high prices.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week in South Africa enough? +
Yes for a focused first time: Cape Town plus the Garden Route. Trying to add Kruger on 7 days loses two days in transport.
Do I need a domestic flight? +
Not along the way. You drive from Cape Town to Plettenberg, then drop the car at George or Port Elizabeth for a short return flight to Cape Town or Johannesburg (€60-100).
What budget for 7 days? +
Count about €1,400 on a budget basis, €1,800 in comfort and €3,400 in premium, per person, flight from Paris included.
Can you self-drive? +
Yes, it's the best way to do the Garden Route. Left-hand driving, excellent main roads, GPS recommended.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, it's one of the simplest: flexible self-drive, penguins, beaches, few long drives. Child seats available with the rental.
What's the best period? +
September to March: sun in Cape Town and on the Garden Route. Whales at Hermanus from June to November. Avoid mid-December to mid-January (high prices).
