Itinerary logistics

A month allows you to mix express buses, KTX and a single domestic flight to Jeju. The only truly useful flight is the crossing to Jeju, the rest is overland. A T-money card covers metro and buses in each city.

Adapt the grand tour to the season

This route circles the highlands and both coasts. In autumn (October), start with Mount Seorak, whose foliage is the first to turn in the country. In spring, the Gyeongju and Jinhae cherry blossoms are worth the detour in early April. In summer, the monsoon and heat make it worth lengthening Jeju and the east coast, more open by the sea. In winter, keep Jeju and Busan for the end: the south coast stays mild while the North and Seorak freeze.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • • In October 2025, I started with Mount Seorak: its foliage turns a week or two before the rest of the country, already ablaze while Seoul was still green.
  • • Keeping six days for Jeju: the island deserves far more than a pass-through, between Hallasan, the olle coasts and Udo Island.
  • • Sleeping in a hanok in Hahoe and Jeonju: waking under a traditional timber frame stays a great memory.
  • • The 30-minute Gyeongju-Busan KTX: you leave the tumuli in the morning and dine by the sea.

⚠️ Would change

  • • Cut Seoul to 5 days and add a night in Gyeongju, richer than it looks.
  • • If walking isn't your thing, swap the big Hallasan hike for the olle trails, flat and coastal.
  • • On a month in the rainy season, reverse it: start with Jeju and the South, finish with the North and Seorak.
  • • Add Suncheon and its wetlands between Jeonju and Jeju if nature draws you more than cities.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Isn't a month in South Korea too long? +
No, it is the ideal format to avoid rushing: the east coast, the Confucian centre, the southern coast and Jeju in depth, with real pauses. Korea is compact, but its highlands and islands deserve time.
How many domestic flights should I plan? +
Only one that's truly useful: the crossing to Jeju (€40-60), reachable by air or ferry only. The Jeju-Seoul return is its counterpart. Everything else runs by KTX and bus.
Is the Korail Pass worth it on a month? +
Yes for the KTX part (Gyeongju-Busan, Busan-Jeonju, and the returns). A Flexible pass covers several days of long-distance journeys. The express buses to Sokcho and Andong are bought separately.
Do I need a visa for a one-month stay? +
EU and many other nationals enjoy visa-free entry for up to 90 days, subject to a K-ETA authorisation to request online before departure. A one-month stay is therefore covered. Check the K-ETA rules in force for your dates.
Can this tour be done without renting a car? +
Yes everywhere except on Jeju, where a car (or scooter) greatly eases travel between the scattered sites. Elsewhere, KTX, buses and metro are more than enough.
What is the best season for this grand tour? +
April-May (cherry blossoms) and October (autumn foliage) are perfect. Summer is hot, humid and monsoon-soaked. Winter is cold and dry in the North, but Jeju and Busan stay mild.
