A short week: everything runs on public transport. The one real journey is the Seoul-Busan KTX, 2h30 for 325 km. A T-money card covers metro and buses everywhere.

Adapt by season

Which season for this loop

Spring (April, cherry blossoms) and autumn (October, foliage) are perfect for both Seoul and Busan. Summer (July-August) is hot and humid, with the monsoon: keep Seoul's museums and covered markets for the downpours, and enjoy Busan's beaches in between. In winter, the Busan coast stays mild while Seoul freezes, which is why the South is best kept for the end.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • • In October 2025, the 3:30pm Seoul-Busan KTX was full while the 9am one stayed quiet: book a morning departure the day before.
  • • Renting a hanbok for Gyeongbokgung: free entry and far better photos for €8 an afternoon.
  • • Keeping Busan for the end: finishing by the sea after Seoul's intensity changes everything.

⚠️ Would change

  • • Skip Suwon and add a half-day in Busan if palace culture has been enough.
  • • Swap the DMZ for a day trip to Gyeongju by KTX if history draws you more than the border.
  • • On 7 days, skip Jeju: the flight and ferry would eat a full day.

Is one week in South Korea enough? +
Yes for a focused first trip: Seoul plus Busan, linked by KTX. Trying to add Jeju or Gyeongju on 7 days loses a day to transport.
Do I need a Korail Pass for this itinerary? +
No. With a single Seoul-Busan KTX (€55), a one-off ticket is cheaper than the pass. The Korail Pass pays off from three long-distance journeys.
Can the DMZ be visited freely? +
No. The demilitarised zone is only accessible on a pre-booked guided tour, with passport. Budget €45-55 for a half-day. Closed Mondays and some public holidays.
Does this itinerary work with kids? +
Yes, it is one of the simplest: punctual, safe transport, easy-to-walk palaces and markets, beaches in Busan. The Seoul metro is stroller-accessible at most stations.
What is the best season? +
April-May (cherry blossoms) and October (autumn foliage) offer the best weather. Avoid July-August, hot and rainy due to the monsoon.
How much does a week cost all in? +
