Adapt by season

Hot south, mild north

Over a month, you cross two climates. Andalusia (Granada, Seville, Cadiz) tops 38°C from June to September, while the Basque Country (Bilbao, San Sebastián) stays cool and rainy even in summer. Spring and autumn balance everything. In peak summer, keep the southern cities to the morning and finish in the green north, which breathes better. In winter, reverse it: the south is mild, the north wet.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In May 2024, I rented a car only for the six Cadiz-Ronda-Malaga days and gave the rest to the train: €210 saved on city-centre parking, which costs a fortune in Seville and Madrid. Keep the car only for rural zones.
  • The Basque finale after the scorching south: the cool of San Sebastián and its starred pintxos close the trip beautifully.
  • Cadiz and the Atlantic mid-route, to breathe between two blocks of intense sightseeing.
  • The Bilbao Guggenheim on a weekday morning, nearly empty before 11am.

⚠️ Would change

  • Swap Ronda for Asturias and the Picos de Europa if hiking draws you more than the white villages.
  • Add Santiago de Compostela and Galicia instead of the Levante for a greener month.
  • Drop a day in Madrid to fit one more night in San Sebastián if food is the priority.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do I need a car for this full month? +
Only for the Cadiz-Ronda-Malaga stretch, poorly served by train. The rest runs on the AVE and domestic flights. Renting the car by section avoids the eye-watering parking of the big cities.
Isn't a month too long for Spain? +
No, the country is vast and varied. A month lets you link the two climates, Mediterranean in the south-east and Atlantic in the north, without rushing. You can also shorten it by skipping the Basque Country.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes over a month, the pace stays relaxed. Kids love the City of Arts in Valencia, the Oceanogràfic and the beaches of Cadiz and San Sebastián. Lighten the Andalusian sightseeing in summer.
What is the best time to go? +
April to June and September to October, to cross both climates without excess heat in the south or rain in the north. Avoid July-August in Andalusia (over 38°C).
How much does a full month in Spain cost? +
Around €2,800 backpacker, €3,600 comfort and €6,500 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
