Itinerary logistics

A week entirely linked by the AVE: no domestic flight, no car. The three high-speed legs each take 2h30 and cost €40 to €90 if you book 2 to 3 months ahead.

Adapt by season

Adjust for the southern heat

Seville and Madrid often top 38°C in July-August, with deserted afternoons. On this week, keep the Andalusian sightseeing to early morning and evening, or shift the trip to May-June or September-October, which are milder. If you travel in peak summer, add a beach half-day in Barcelona and favour air-conditioned sites (the Alcázar, the Prado) during the hottest hours.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In October 2024, the Madrid-Seville AVE ticket booked two months ahead cost me €38; the same trip bought the day before at the station climbed to €79. Booking early is the only real way to save.
  • The Sagrada Família right at opening: the morning light through the east windows is the best moment.
  • The Seville Alcázar in the first slot, before the groups arrive around 10:30am.

⚠️ Would change

  • Drop one night in Madrid to add a day in Seville if Andalusia appeals to you more.
  • Swap Madrid for Valencia if you prefer the sea and paella to classical art.
  • On 7 days, do not try to add Granada: the Alhambra deserves a full stop of its own.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week in Spain enough? +
Yes for three flagship cities linked by the AVE. Trying to add Granada or Valencia over 7 days forces you to rush. Three well-lived stops beat five glimpsed ones.
Train or car for this itinerary? +
The train, without question. The AVE links the three cities in 2h30 each, with no parking or tolls. A car only becomes useful for Andalusian villages or the coast.
Do I need to book sights in advance? +
Yes for the Sagrada Família, the Alcázar and Park Güell, which require timed tickets. The other sites can be bought on site without trouble outside high season.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, the train journeys are comfortable and short. Plan afternoon breaks in summer because of the heat, especially in Seville and Madrid.
What is the best time to go? +
April to June and September to October: pleasant temperatures and reasonable crowds. Avoid July-August, when Seville and Madrid often exceed 38°C.
How much does one week cost all in? +
Around €850 backpacker, €1,150 comfort and €2,200 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
