Adapt by season

Coast or inland, depending on the month

This itinerary mixes coastline (Barcelona, Valencia) with inland cities that bake in summer (Granada, Cordoba, Seville). From June to September, Andalusia often tops 38°C: visit the Alhambra and Alcázar early, keep the sea for the afternoon. From April to June and September to October, the whole route is comfortable. In winter, Granada can be chilly with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada as a backdrop.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In September 2023, I booked the Alhambra twelve days ahead and only the 8:30am slot was left; all the others had gone. Book the Alhambra ticket as soon as your dates are set, it is the one site that fills up weeks in advance.
  • The Valencia-Granada flight over the train: a full day saved for €50.
  • Toledo as a day trip from Madrid: 33 minutes by AVE for a complete medieval city.
  • The Mirador San Nicolás in Granada at golden hour, the Alhambra turning red against the Sierra Nevada.

⚠️ Would change

  • Swap Valencia for Bilbao and the Guggenheim if you prefer the green north to the Levante.
  • Add a night in Cordoba instead of a single stop if the patios draw you in.
  • Skip Toledo and keep Madrid for shopping and food if the pace feels too dense.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Can this itinerary be done without a car? +
Yes, almost entirely by train. Only the Valencia-Granada leg is better flown (1h versus 7h train+bus). The rest is covered by the AVE and regional trains.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, with children over 6. The journeys are short and comfortable. Lighten the Andalusian sightseeing in summer because of the heat, and plan the City of Arts in Valencia, which kids love.
Do I need to book all hotels before leaving? +
Barcelona, Seville and Granada: yes, especially in high season. Cordoba and Valencia: a few days ahead is fine outside the Feria or Fallas periods.
What is the best time to go? +
April to June and September to October. Avoid July-August, when Andalusia tops 38°C. Watch out too for the Fallas of Valencia (March) and the Feria of Seville (April), beautiful but packed.
How much does this 2-week trip cost? +
Around €1,500 backpacker, €1,950 comfort and €3,800 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
