How to get around

Itinerary logistics

Over a month, the private driver stays the default (~€30/day all-in), but you alternate it with the blue train and a few legs north. The tour loops the island clockwise to follow the good weather. Budget around €900 for the driver over 30 days, the biggest line after the flight.

Adapt by season

Touring between two monsoons

A month lets you follow the good weather. From December to March, go clockwise and finish on the southwest coast (Mirissa, Galle), then dry. From May to September, reverse it: start with the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), at its best in that window, and trim the southwest under the monsoon. The centre and tea country stay workable all year.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • • In March 2023 I pushed all the way to Jaffna though I'd been told it was too far: three days in the Tamil North, with its own cuisine and Hindu temples, was the trip's biggest surprise, far from the classic circuits.
  • • Four nights at Mirissa near the end: after three weeks on the road, that long rest makes all the difference.
  • • Looping the island clockwise to follow the right coastal season, rather than zigzagging.
  • • Anuradhapura by bike at dawn: white-clad pilgrims around the dagobas, a moment out of time.

⚠️ Would change

  • • Skip Arugam Bay outside surf season (November-March) when the waves drop, and add a night at Trincomalee or Ella.
  • • Book Mirissa and Galle several weeks ahead in high season.
  • • Swap a Kandy night for a day at Horton Plains (World's End) if you enjoy high-altitude hiking.

Itinerary FAQ

Isn't a month too much for such a small island? +
No. The island is compact but the roads are slow, and a month finally lets you add the Tamil North (Jaffna) and the east coast, two regions short trips skip. You travel without rushing.
Do I need a private driver for 30 days? +
It's the simplest (~€30/day all-in, ~€900 total), but over a month you can alternate with trains and buses to cut the budget. Keep the Kandy-Ella blue train, which is irreplaceable.
Is the North (Jaffna) really worth the detour? +
Yes over a month. The Jaffna peninsula has a distinct Tamil and Hindu culture, islands reachable by ferry and a cuisine of its own. It's the least touristy region on the island.
When should I go for this grand tour? +
December to March clockwise (finishing on the dry southwest). From May to September, reverse it and start with the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), at its best then.
