How to get around
A private driver is the default way to travel Sri Lanka: €30-45/day, air-conditioned car, total flexibility on slow roads. The one exception is the Kandy-Ella blue train, a must. Distances look short on the map but the roads are winding, so always allow extra time.

Adapt by season
Sri Lanka has two opposing rainy seasons. For this itinerary (centre and south coast), travel from December to March: calm sea at Mirissa, clear skies over Sigiriya and Ella. From May to September the southwest monsoon soaks Galle and Mirissa, so switch to the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), which stays dry. The centre (Kandy, Ella) is workable almost year-round, with late-afternoon showers.
