How to get around
This itinerary combines a private driver on most legs with two stretches of the blue train (Kandy-Nanu Oya then Nanu Oya-Ella), both a must. Budget about €450 for the driver over 14 days. Roads are slow and winding, so always allow more time than the map suggests.
Private driver over 14 days
~€32/day all-in · air-conditioned car · local agency
Train Kandy → Nanu Oya → Ella
€5 · 7 h in two legs · seats 30 days ahead
4x4 safari at Yala
€35 + entry · 3 h · early-morning departure
Southern expressway Galle → Colombo
2 h · toll · the only fast road in the country
Adapt by season
This itinerary ends on the southwest coast (Mirissa, Galle), at its best from December to March: flat sea, clear skies. From May to September the southwest monsoon soaks this side, so switch the end to the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), which stays dry, via Ella and Yala. The cultural centre and tea mountains stay workable almost year-round, with late-afternoon showers.
