How to get around

Itinerary logistics

This itinerary combines a private driver on most legs with two stretches of the blue train (Kandy-Nanu Oya then Nanu Oya-Ella), both a must. Budget about €450 for the driver over 14 days. Roads are slow and winding, so always allow more time than the map suggests.

Adapt by season

Two monsoons, two coasts

This itinerary ends on the southwest coast (Mirissa, Galle), at its best from December to March: flat sea, clear skies. From May to September the southwest monsoon soaks this side, so switch the end to the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), which stays dry, via Ella and Yala. The cultural centre and tea mountains stay workable almost year-round, with late-afternoon showers.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2024 I split the blue train in two with a night in Nuwara Eliya: less fatigue, and the Nanu Oya-Ella stretch the next morning is the finest, done in the cool with the best light.
  • Pidurangala Rock rather than Sigiriya for sunset: cheaper, less crowded, and the view looks back at Lion Rock itself.
  • Three nights in Mirissa: enough to combine whales, surf and hidden beaches without rushing.
  • The private driver over the full trip: he knows the photo stops and the best local canteens.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Polonnaruwa if archaeology doesn't grab you and keep a full rest day at Sigiriya.
  • Book Mirissa and Galle ahead in high season (December-February), both fill up fast.
  • Swap Yala for Udawalawe if you mainly want elephants, more guaranteed and on smoother tracks.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is two weeks the right length for Sri Lanka? +
Yes, it's the ideal length: cultural triangle, tea mountains, safari and south coast without rushing. You can take your time at Mirissa and split the blue train in two for less fatigue.
Do I need a private driver for 14 days? +
It's the most comfortable option given how slow the roads are (~€32/day all-in). Keep both stretches of the Kandy-Ella blue train, which are irreplaceable. The driver waits for you at the stations.
Can this itinerary be done by public transport? +
Yes in theory (buses and trains everywhere), but expect to lose 2-3 days in transit over 14. The driver-plus-blue-train mix is the best time-for-budget compromise.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, with a private driver. The elephants, deer, train and calm south-coast beaches appeal to children. Trim it by skipping some archaeological sites if needed.
When is the best time to go? +
December to March for the centre and southwest coast. From May to September, switch the end to the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), which stays dry during the southwest monsoon.
How much do two weeks in Sri Lanka cost all-in? +
Budget about €1,400 backpacking, €1,900 in comfort and €3,800 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
