How many days to visit Kandy? +
One to two days are enough for the Temple of the Tooth, the lake, a Kandyan dance show and the Peradeniya gardens. Many travelers extend by heading to tea country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella) on the scenic train.
What should you wear to visit the Temple of the Tooth? +
Shoulders and knees covered, barefoot inside (leave shoes at the deposit). Avoid tight clothing. The temple opens early in the morning and during pujas, at 5:30am, 9:30am and 6:30pm.
How do you get from Colombo to Kandy? +
The train is the most pleasant option (about 3h through the hills, book 1st or 2nd class). By car or bus, count 3 to 4h depending on traffic on the highway then the mountain road.
When is the Esala Perahera festival? +
In July or August depending on the lunar calendar, over about ten nights. It is one of Asia's most beautiful processions (adorned elephants, dancers, fire-bearers) but the town is packed: book your accommodation several months ahead.
