How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month from west to east: Istanbul, the Aegean and Lycian coast by car, Cappadocia, then eastern Anatolia (Nemrut, Mardin, Gaziantep) linked by domestic flights. The flights avoid the very long distances to the east.

✈️

Domestic flights

€40-90 · Istanbul-Izmir, Antalya-Cappadocia, to the east · save 10-15 h of road

🚗

Car on the coast and east

€35-45/day · Aegean, Lycia, and around Mardin

🎈

Cappadocia balloon

€180 · at sunrise · book ahead, wind-dependent

🌅

Sunrise at Mount Nemrut

2,150 m · giant heads · pre-dawn start, freezing

Adapt by season

Eastern Anatolia outside summer and winter

This month pushes to eastern Anatolia (Mount Nemrut, Mardin), a high-altitude region with a harsh winter and a scorching summer. The ideal window is May-June and September-October: Nemrut accessible (sometimes closed by snow until May), Cappadocia windy but calm, the Aegean coast still swimmable. Sunrise over the giant heads of Nemrut (2,150 m) is freezing even in summer: bring a fleece.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In June 2024 I climbed to the summit of Mount Nemrut at 4.30am for sunrise: the giant heads emerging from the gloom at 2,150 m, in a biting cold and total silence. Half an hour later the first buses arrived. The pre-dawn start is the only magical moment.
  • Pushing to eastern Anatolia (Mardin, Nemrut): the little-known Türkiye, far from the marked circuits.
  • Gaziantep for the food: the capital of baklava and the Zeugma mosaics.
  • Keeping Cappadocia in the middle of the trip, to slot the balloon across several nights.

⚠️ Would change

  • Not attempting Nemrut before May: the summit can stay closed by snow.
  • Taking the domestic flights east rather than the road: 12-15 h saved.
  • Sharing the driving on the winding Lycian coast.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too long for Türkiye? +
Not if you push to eastern Anatolia. Two weeks already cover Istanbul, the coast and Cappadocia; the month adds Mount Nemrut, Mardin and Gaziantep, a little-known Türkiye.
How many domestic flights? +
Three to four: Istanbul-Izmir, Antalya-Cappadocia, Cappadocia-eastern Anatolia, then back to Istanbul. They avoid 12 to 15 h of road east. The rest is by car.
Is Mount Nemrut worth the detour east? +
Yes for those who like getting off the beaten track: the giant heads of the sanctuary (2,150 m, UNESCO) at sunrise are unique. Accessible May to October, sometimes snowbound before.
What currency and what budget? +
The Turkish lira (TRY), volatile: pay by card or withdraw on site. Budget €2,500 backpacking, €3,300 in comfort, €6,500 premium, flight included, per person.
What is the best time to go? +
May-June and September-October: eastern Anatolia accessible, reliable balloons, coast still swimmable. Scorching summer in the east and south, harsh winter at altitude.
Can you do this month without going east? +
Yes: replace Nemrut, Mardin and Gaziantep with more time on the Lycian coast and the Black Sea in the north. But the east is what sets the 1-month version apart.
