Balloons and Anatolian heat

This itinerary goes through Cappadocia, where the sunrise balloon flight is the highlight: it only runs in light wind, more common in spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). In high summer, central Anatolia tops 35°C in the afternoon and flights are sometimes cancelled for heat or wind. Istanbul stays pleasant almost year-round, best avoided in the July-August heatwave.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In September 2024 I booked the balloon for my first night in Cappadocia: that flight ran and the next day's was cancelled for wind. Booking early in the stay leaves room to reschedule if the weather grounds the balloons.
  • Sleeping in a cave hotel in Göreme, with a terrace facing the valleys: the view of the balloons on waking.
  • Taking the domestic flight rather than the night bus: a full day saved for €50.
  • The Bosphorus cruise at sunset, between the two continents.

⚠️ Would change

  • Adding a 4th night in Cappadocia for two chances at a balloon flight.
  • Avoiding July-August: 35°C in Anatolia, balloons sometimes grounded.
  • Booking Topkapı and Hagia Sophia online to skip the queue.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a week enough for Türkiye? +
Yes for the flagship duo, Istanbul and Cappadocia. To add the Aegean coast (Ephesus, Pamukkale, Antalya), you need two weeks.
Do you need a domestic flight? +
Strongly recommended. Istanbul-Cappadocia by bus takes 11 h overnight; the flight is 1h30 for about €50. Book ahead, prices rise.
Do you need a visa for Türkiye? +
No for French, Belgian and Swiss nationals: free entry up to 90 days with a valid passport. Canadians must apply for an e-visa online.
Is the balloon flight guaranteed? +
No: flights depend on the wind and are sometimes cancelled, especially in summer. Booking early in the stay leaves room to reschedule. Budget €180 for the sunrise flight.
What is the best time to go? +
April-June and September-October: calm skies for the balloons, mild temperatures. Hot summer in Anatolia (35°C), cool but magical winter under snow in Cappadocia.
How much does this week cost? +
Around €800 backpacking, €1,150 in comfort and €2,400 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. The balloon (€180) alone weighs on the budget.
