How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month runs on a rental car in the Emirates, then crossing the border into Oman. A flight links the Musandam enclave to Muscat, the rest is on wheels. Plan a 4×4 for the Omani section (Wahiba, Jebel Akhdar).

🚗

Car in the Emirates

€40-55/day · excellent highways · the whole country

🛥️

Dhow in Musandam

~€40 a day · fjords and dolphins · from Khasab

✈️

Flight Khasab → Muscat

~€80 · the enclave isn't linked by Omani road

🚙

4×4 in Oman

double the 2WD rate · essential for Wahiba and Jebel Akhdar

Adapt by season

One realistic window: November to March

Over a month mixing the Emirates and Oman, November to March is the only comfortable window: 24 to 28°C, desert and mountains workable. From April to October the heat tops 40°C on both sides of the border. The one exception, Oman's Dhofar (Salalah), has its khareef from June to September, green and cool at 25°C, but it is far from Musandam: save it for a dedicated trip, not this northern loop.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2025 I kept Musandam for mid-month: after two weeks in the Emirates, the dhow cruise in the fjords, dolphins around the boat, was the high point of the trip.
  • Sleep up at Jebel Akhdar: 10°C cooler, the scent of roses in spring and an incredible starry sky.
  • Take the Khasab-Muscat flight rather than the double return via Dubai: three hours of driving saved.

⚠️ Would change

  • Cut a day of Abu Dhabi theme parks to add a night at Wadi Shab.
  • Skip Musandam if the budget is tight and go straight from the Emirates to Muscat by flight.
  • In very strong heat, shorten the desert and favour the coast and altitude.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do you need two visas for this Emirates-Oman loop? +
Yes. French citizens enter the Emirates visa-free (90 days). For Oman, an e-visa (~€20) is needed beyond 14 days, or to enter via Musandam. Check the border crossing conditions at Dibba before departure.
Can you link Musandam to Muscat by road? +
Not directly: Musandam is an Omani enclave separated from the rest of the country by Emirati territory. The simplest route is a Khasab → Muscat flight, or a return via Dubai then a domestic flight.
Is a 4×4 mandatory? +
In the Emirates, no (except off-road at Liwa). In Oman, yes for Wahiba Sands and Jebel Akhdar, where access is 4×4-only. Count roughly double a 2WD rate.
What budget for 30 days? +
Count around €4,000 backpacking, €5,200 in comfort and €8,500 and up premium, flights and rental included, per person. Long-term car hire weighs the most.
Isn't a month too long for the Gulf? +
Not if you add Oman. The Emirates alone saturate in two weeks, but the Sultanate brings the nature they lack: fjords, green mountains, wadis and unspoiled desert. The contrast justifies the month.
What's the best period? +
November to March, on both sides of the border. It's the only window where desert, mountains and cruises are comfortable. Avoid summer, above 40°C everywhere except distant Dhofar.
