The essentials
When to go to United States, in brief
May to October for the Northeast
New York, Boston, Chicago and the East Coast are at their best in the warm season, 20-30°C, long days and every site open.
Late September-October for fall
Vermont, the Berkshires and nearby Quebec blaze red and gold. The most photogenic window in the country.
Spring and fall in the Southwest
Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Death Valley: aim for March-May or September-November. Summer tops 40°C, dangerous on the trail.
November to April for Florida
When the North shivers, the South enjoys its finest weather: 22-28°C, dry, perfect for the Keys, the Everglades and theme parks.
October to July in California
Mild coast almost year-round. Skip the summer smog of the big valleys, enjoy the coast in spring and fall.
August-October: hurricane season
The Gulf and Atlantic coast (Florida, Louisiana, the Carolinas) can be hit. Watch the forecast if you target these regions then.
The verdict
The best periods
May - October
The best window for Northeast cities, western parks in summer (deserts aside) and the coast. Late September-October for the colors.
November - March
Prime season for Florida and the South, skiing in the Rockies and the Sierra. The Northeast is cold but festive (Christmas in New York).
July - August (deserts)
Extreme heat in the Southwest (Death Valley, Phoenix: over 45°C) and peak crowds everywhere. Book far ahead if you go.

Our analysis
The United States is not one season but many: the country spans six time zones and every climate, from tropical Florida to Alaska’s Arctic summers. The right time depends entirely on your route. Here is how to decide.
The Northeast and cities: May to October
New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington and the whole East Coast are at their best in the warm season. Expect 20 to 30°C, long days and every site open. Winter is cold and snowy there, but festive around Christmas. The real card to play is fall: from late September to October, New England blazes red and gold, and it is arguably the finest photo window in the country.
The Southwest and Florida: opposite calendars
For the great parks (Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Death Valley), aim for spring or fall. Summer is scorching and dangerous there: Phoenix and Death Valley top 45°C, and hiking becomes risky. Florida and the South, by contrast, enjoy their finest weather from November to April, when the rest of the country shivers: 22 to 28°C, dry, ideal for the Keys and the Everglades.
The summer and big-weekend trap
July and August stack extreme desert heat with peak crowds everywhere. Domestic flights also spike around the 4th of July and Thanksgiving (late November), two weekends when the whole country moves. A blunt opinion: for a first big western road trip, favor May-June or September. You gain the weather and lose the crowds.
