Our analysis
The Dominican Republic follows one simple rule: aim for the dry season, December to April. The whole country plays the same tune then, from the beaches of Punta Cana to Samaná Bay. The rest of the year calls for a trade-off, especially in late summer.
The dry season, December to April
This is the prime window. Trade winds temper the heat, the sea stays calm on the east coast and temperatures stay pleasant: 25 to 30°C by day. January to March pair two assets: stable conditions and the arrival of humpback whales in Samaná, breeding by the thousand. December to February are the busiest months, and prices climb around Christmas and New Year, when you should book two to three months ahead.
The north coast, around Puerto Plata, runs on its own calendar: it gets its rain earlier, and its best window falls more in February to April.
The late-summer trap
From May, humidity sets in. Until August, showers stay short and fall in the afternoon: a fair compromise with soft prices and few crowds. September and October, by contrast, concentrate the heaviest rain and the hurricane risk. Punta Cana is often spared the worst storms, but the risk is real. If you travel then, keep an eye on the bulletins.
One useful nuance: for dancing, July is merengue month in Santo Domingo. Hot and humid, but it is the country’s biggest music party.
