How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month to cross the country from the south to North Cape: scenic trains, a car in the fjords, the Hurtigruten coastal express and domestic flights. The big leaps north are by plane, the road would double the duration.

€100-150 · scenic lines · book on vy.no

🚗

Car in the fjords (Flåm-Trondheim)

€80/day · mountain roads, tolls and ferries extra

Domestic flights to the Lofoten and north

€150-200 each · Widerøe / SAS · big time saver

⛴️

Hurtigruten coastal express

🚗

Arctic road to North Cape

long but spectacular · paid undersea tunnel to Nordkapp

Adapt by season

Follow the light north

This grand tour heads due north: target June to August for the North Cape midnight sun and open mountain roads. In June the sun stops setting the moment you cross the Arctic Circle (Bodø). Off-season, North Cape gets hard to reach and Route 17 (Helgeland) less reliable: replace the far north with a winter northern-lights combo in Tromsø.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In July 2024 I reached North Cape at 1am: the plateau was almost empty and the sun skimmed the Arctic Ocean, while at 6pm it was packed with cruise buses. At the edge of Europe, the white night is the best slot.
  • Preikestolen early in the morning at Stavanger: the summit to yourself before the 11am groups.
  • Six full days in the Lofoten: it's the stop you never shorten without regret.
  • The Hurtigruten coastal express between Lofoten and Tromsø: you cross the Trollfjord from the deck, for free.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Trondheim (2 days) if the calendar is tight, and head faster to the Lofoten.
  • Take the Trondheim-Bodø flight rather than the night train if you want an extra day up north.
  • Book the Lofoten rorbu and the North Cape hotel six months ahead in summer.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too long for Norway? +
No. The country stretches 1,750 km from south to north. A month lets you reach North Cape without rushing, with rest days. Under three weeks you have to cut either the southern fjords or the far north.
Do I need a car for the whole month? +
No, you alternate: train and boat in the south, car in the fjords (Flåm-Trondheim), flights and coastal express for the far north, then a car again at North Cape. Renting continuously would cost a fortune in ferries and empty legs.
Is North Cape worth the detour? +
For the symbol of Europe's edge and the midnight sun over the Arctic, yes. But it's far and expensive to reach. If time is short, stop at Tromsø, which already delivers the arctic experience.
When is the best time? +
June to August: midnight sun up to North Cape, open roads, frequent ferries. May and September work in the south but the far north gets uncertain.
Will I see the northern lights? +
Not in high summer, the northern sky never goes dark. Auroras show October to March: that would need a winter itinerary, shorter and centred on Tromsø.
How much does this month cost all in? +
About €5,500 backpacking, €7,000 in comfort and €13,000 premium, return flight from Paris included, per person. Norway is still Europe's most expensive country for food and lodging.
