Adapt by season

Midnight sun or polar night

This itinerary targets summer (June to August): midnight sun in the Lofoten, open mountain roads, full ferry frequency. In June-July the sun never sets north of the Arctic Circle. In winter the Lofoten keep their charm under snow and offer auroras, but the Geiranger-Trollstigen road closes and days are very short: switch then to a southern-fjords combo (by train) plus the Lofoten by plane.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In June 2025 I climbed Reinebringen at 11pm under the midnight sun: alone at the summit, while at noon the trail was an unbroken queue. The midnight sun changes how you use the whole day.
  • Sleeping in a rorbu at Reine rather than a hotel: you wake up over the water, between the peaks.
  • Taking the Bergen-Lofoten flight rather than the road: three days saved for the same budget.
  • Keeping a night in Tromsø at the end: a lively town after five days of villages.

⚠️ Would change

  • Book the Lofoten rorbu six months ahead in summer: they sell out fast.
  • Skip Ålesund (1 night) if the domestic flight doesn't line up, and head straight to Bergen.
  • Add Senja, the island next to the Lofoten, less busy, if you have two extra days.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Can you do this itinerary without a domestic flight? +
In theory yes (Hurtigruten coastal express + bus), but you lose 3 to 4 days. For 14 days the Bergen-Lofoten flight is strongly advised. Budget ~€250 for the two domestic flights.
Do I need a car the whole way? +
No. Train and boat are enough in the southern fjords. The car only helps on two segments: Flåm-Ålesund and the Lofoten, where a single road (the E10) links the whole archipelago.
When is the best time? +
June to August: midnight sun in the Lofoten, open roads, full ferry frequency. May and September work too but with less night light.
How many days do the Lofoten really need? +
Five, as here. Three covers Reine and Å, but Henningsvær, the beaches and a hike need time. It's the stop you'll most regret cutting short.
Will I see the northern lights in summer? +
No, the sky never goes dark from late May to late July. For auroras you must come October to March: a different itinerary, a different season.
How much does this trip cost all in? +
About €2,800 backpacking, €3,500 in comfort and €6,500 premium, return flight from Paris included, per person. Norway is still Europe's most expensive country.
