The essentials
When to go to Scotland, in brief
May to September: the sweet spot
Long days, 12 to 20°C, green moors. May and June are the driest, September brings autumn colors.
The midge trap
These biting flies swarm from late May to September, peaking in July-August, mostly in the wet Highlands and on Skye.
May and June, the best months
The driest months, long days, little wind, midges still scarce. My favorite slot for the Highlands.
September, the quiet autumn
10 to 16°C, heather then turning leaves, fewer tourists. Excellent clear views for hiking.
Rain possible anywhere
No real dry season. The west coast (Skye, Fort William) is wetter, the east (Edinburgh) drier.
Edinburgh's festival in August
The Fringe turns the city into the world's largest performing-arts festival. Book very early, everything sells out.
The verdict
The best periods
May - Sept
Long days, green moors, the kindest weather. May-June for dry, September for color and calm.
April & Oct
Shoulder seasons: cool but bright, first blooms or last leaves, soft prices and quieter sites.
Nov - Feb
Very short days (6-8 h), cold and rain, some Highland access closed. Except for Hogmanay and the winter mood.

Our analysis
Scotland has no dry season, just months kinder than others. The simple rule: aim for May to September for light and greenery, with a clear preference for May-June and September.
May to September, the fine season
This is the prime window. Days stretch to 18 hours of light in June, the moors green over then flush with purple heather, and temperatures climb to 12-20°C. May and June are the driest and least windy, ideal for the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. July and August stay the warmest, but also the busiest and the midge peak.
The midge trap
These tiny biting flies swarm from late May to September, mostly in still, humid weather, across the Highlands and islands. My firm take: if you hike in the North, favor May-June or September, when they thin out. A repellent stays essential in summer.
Autumn and winter
September is an underrated month: autumn colors, often clear skies, uncrowded sites and still-mild temperatures, around 10-16°C. October turns rainy but keeps fine foliage. From November to February, days shrink to 6-8 hours, cold and wet. You go for Hogmanay, the castle atmosphere and low prices, not for hiking.
