The essentials
When to go to South Africa, in brief
May to September: safari season
Dry austral winter. In Kruger, the vegetation thins, wildlife gathers at the waterholes. The time for the best sightings.
Cape Town, against the grain
Mediterranean climate: dry in summer (Nov-March), wet in winter (June-August). For the city and beaches, aim for December to February.
Whales June to November
Southern right whales hug the Whale Coast. Peak in September, watched from shore in Hermanus.
Hot austral summer (Dec-Feb)
Kruger turns hot and greener, wildlife disperses. Ideal for the coast and Cape Town, less so for safari.
September-October: the sweet spot
Late dry season in Kruger, whales at their peak, Namaqualand flowers. One of the best windows to combine regions.
Late-December high season
The year-end holidays and January fill Cape Town and the coast. High prices, book very far ahead.
The verdict
The best periods
Sept - Oct
The best compromise: Kruger still dry, whales peaking, flowers and mild weather in Cape Town. Book 2 to 4 months ahead.
Nov - March
Austral summer: perfect for Cape Town and beaches, hotter and greener in Kruger. December-January is pricey and crowded.
June - Aug (Cape Town)
Wet, windy winter in Cape Town. On the flip side, it is the safari peak: it all depends on your plan.

Our analysis
South Africa has a trait few countries share: two opposite climate calendars depending on the region. The safari and the city of Cape Town are not visited at the same time. Understanding this split is how you avoid the misstep that ruins an itinerary.
The austral winter, May to September: safari season
This is the prime window for Kruger and the Northeast reserves. The vegetation thins, wildlife gathers around the last waterholes and spotting becomes easy. Mornings are cold, 6 to 9ยฐC, but afternoons stay mild. On the Whale Coast, southern right whales hug the shore from June to November, peaking in September, watched from land in Hermanus.
The austral summer, November to March: Cape Town time
Cape Town runs the reverse of the rest of the country. Its Mediterranean climate brings rain in winter (June-August) and a dry, hot summer (November-March). For the city, the beaches, the winelands and the Garden Route, aim for December to February: 16 to 28ยฐC, sun, long evenings. The catch: December and January are pricey and crowded, to book well ahead.
The sweet spot: September-October
If you want to combine everything, aim for September-October. Kruger stays dry, the whales are peaking, the Namaqualand fills with flowers and Cape Townโs weather turns mild. This is, to my mind, the best window for a first trip mixing safari, coast and city without facing the extremes of each season.

From November to March: a dry, warm Mediterranean climate, 16-28ยฐC. Avoid June to August, when winter is wet and windy.
When to go on safari in Kruger? +
From May to September, in the dry austral winter: wildlife gathers at the waterholes and the thin vegetation makes spotting easy.
When to see whales in South Africa? +
From June to November on the Whale Coast, with a peak in September. In Hermanus, viewing happens straight from the shore.
Is there a season to avoid in South Africa? +
