Our analysis
Morocco strings together desert, mountains, medinas and coast, so you have to think by region. But one rule holds for most of the country: aim for spring and autumn, March-May and September-November, to enjoy it all without the inland summer furnace.
Mar-May and Sept-Nov, the fine window
This is the prime window. Temperatures stay in the comfortable zone, 20 to 28°C, skies clear and rain grows scarce. Marrakech, Fès and the medinas can be walked without sweating, the Atlas hiked, and the desert stays doable. In May, the Dadès roses scent the valleys. My firm take: for the Sahara, favor October-November or February-March, when nights are cool and the sky perfectly starry.
Summer, to flee inland
July and August turn Marrakech and the desert into an oven: 40 to 42°C in town, up to 45°C in the dunes. Sightseeing becomes punishing. The escape exists, though: the Atlantic coast. Essaouira and Agadir stay around 20-26°C thanks to the trade winds, perfect when inland bakes. It is also the season of the great festivals, from Fès to Essaouira.
Winter, mild and affordable
From December to February, Marrakech stays mild by day, around 18-22°C, but evenings are cool and the desert freezing at night. The High Atlas blankets in snow, offering skiing and striking landscapes. January and February are the cheapest, quietest months, perfect for those after the cities and coast without the crowds.
