December to March: the austral summer
Long days, mild climate, 15-27°C. The prime window for hiking and the Great Walks. It is also the busiest stretch.
Milford Track and the Great Walks
The great-track season runs October to April. April marks the last window before the winter closure.
Skiing in Queenstown and Wanaka
From June to October, the Southern Alps fill with snow. July-August offers the best conditions on the slopes.
March and November: crowd-free
November brings a bright spring, March a summer warmth without Christmas prices. Two smart windows.
Milder North, sharper South
The North Island stays pleasant even in winter. The South Island has hot summers and cold winters, down to -10°C at altitude.
Fiordland, on its own
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on Earth. Rain is part of the scenery: pack a raincoat year-round.

Our analysis
New Zealand has seasons flipped from Europe: December is summer, July is winter. The rule is simple: for hiking and landscapes, aim for the austral summer, December to March.
The austral summer, December to March
This is the prime window. Days are long, the climate mild, from 15 to 27°C depending on the island, and the Great Walks are open. February is often the driest and most stable month. The nuance to know: the period between Christmas and New Year is the busiest and most expensive of the year, when New Zealanders take their own holidays. Book early, especially the Milford Track huts.
March extends summer with the same warmth, but without the crowds. It is the smart window to enjoy the trails in peace.
Spring, autumn and winter: their own options
October-November and April offer pleasant spring and autumn, with fewer crowds and softer prices. April marks the last window for the great tracks before the winter closure. Winter (June-August) is not one to flee either: it opens ski season in Queenstown and Wanaka, and the North Island stays mild.
One case worth planning for: Fiordland, around Milford Sound, ranks among the wettest places on the planet. Rain is part of the scenery and feeds the waterfalls. Pack a raincoat, whatever the season.
