The essentials
When to go to Sri Lanka, in brief
December to March: South and West
Dry season over Colombo, the southern beaches and the Cultural Triangle. 27-30°C, clear skies, calm sea. The high season.
May to September: the East coast
Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay are dry and calm when the West takes the rain. A major surf spot.
Two opposite monsoons
The Yala (May-Aug) soaks the Southwest, the Maha (Oct-Jan) the Northeast. So the weather is always fine on one side of the island.
Cool in the highlands
Ella, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya sit around 15-22°C, with cool nights. At their best from January to March.
April, the hottest
Heat peak everywhere, up to 35°C, and the transition month between the two monsoons. Dry but heavy on the coasts.
A festival not to miss
Kandy's Esala Perahera (18-28 August 2026) lines up over 100 adorned elephants, drummers and fire dancers.

Our analysis
Sri Lanka rests on a useful paradox: with two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, the weather is always fine somewhere on the island. The real question is not when to go, but where to go depending on the month.
Two monsoons, two coasts
The Yala monsoon soaks the Southwest from May to August, while the Maha hits the Northeast from October to January. In practice: from December to March, the South (Galle, Mirissa), the West (Colombo) and the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Anuradhapura) are dry, at 27-30°C. This is the best overall window and the busiest.
From May to September, the logic flips. The East coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Arugam Bay) turns fine, calm sea and a swell perfect for surfing, while the West takes the rain.
Highlands and April heat
The highlands play their own game. Ella, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya sit around 15 to 22°C, with distinctly cool nights. January to March are the driest and clearest there for hiking and the scenic train to Ella.
April is a pivot month between the two monsoons: dry but the hottest, up to 35°C on the coasts, and marked by the Sinhala New Year when everything closes. My advice: for a classic first trip (South, beaches, culture), aim for January or February, the heart of the dry season. Avoid October-November, the only stretch when both coasts can take the rain together.
