The essentials
When to go to Tunisia, in brief
Spring and autumn: the sweet spot
April-June and September-October: 20-28°C, clear skies. The only stretch where coast, sites and desert are pleasant together.
Summer for the coast
From June to September, the shore (Hammamet, Djerba, Mahdia) hits its season. Warm sea, sun, but crowds and high prices.
The Sahara in the cool season
Desert pleasant October to April, 20-30°C by day. In summer, the interior tops 40°C: camel rides become risky.
July-August: avoid the south
Extreme heat inland and in the desert. Better to stay on the coast or shift your trip.
Winter, mild but cool
December-February: 10-20°C on the coast, cold nights in the south. Good for cities and the desert if you cover the evenings.
Festivals to plan around
Carthage and El Jem (music, July-August), Douz Sahara Festival (December). Two opposite moods across the year.

Our analysis
Tunisia comes down to a wide climate gap between the Mediterranean coast and the desert. The right moment depends on what you come to see: the beach calls for summer, the Sahara for winter, and everything else fits in spring or autumn.
Spring and autumn, the prime window
From April to June and September to October, the country is at its best. Temperatures hover around 20 to 28°C, skies stay clear and this is the only stretch where you can chain the coast, the Roman sites (Carthage, El Jem, Dougga) and the desert without suffering. September extends the warm sea, which makes it arguably the best month of the year for a full itinerary.
Summer for the coast, winter for the desert
From June to September, the shore hits its season: Hammamet, Djerba and Mahdia enjoy a warm sea and guaranteed sun. But the interior and the Sahara climb above 40°C, which makes excursions risky. Conversely, from October to April, the desert turns pleasant, 20 to 30°C by day, cooler at night. If the Sahara is your goal, aim for these months and cover the evenings.
The July-August trap in the south
The classic mistake is planning a desert loop in high summer. Avoid it: July and August concentrate extreme heat inland. Keep these two months to the coast, or shift the whole trip to spring. The difference in comfort, and safety, is sharp.
